Salt Spray Testing
Because salt spray exists in the natural environment, salt spray corrosion is a common and most destructive atmospheric corrosion. Chloride ions in salt spray will penetrate the oxide layer and protective layer on the surface of metal materials, have an electrochemical reaction with the internal metal, which will destroy the surface and properties of metal materials, and further affect and damage the products through the pores and cracks on the metal surface. Salt spray test is a kind of environmental test which uses salt spray test equipment to simulate the environmental conditions of salt spray to test the corrosion resistance of products or metal materials. The corrosion resistance results of a material or coating in a salt spray test can help you determine whether a particular fastener is durable enough to meet your needs.
The test methods we provide include but are not limited to:
Neutral Salt Spray Test (NSS)
Applicable scope: metal coating anodizing film, organic coating on metal substrate
Neutral Salt Spray Test is the earliest and most widely used accelerated corrosion test method. In a specific test chamber, the salt water containing 5% NaCl and the pH value of 6.5-7.2 is sprayed through the spray device, so that the salt spray settles on the sample to be tested, and the surface corrosion state is observed after a certain period of time. The temperature of the test chamber is (35±2)°C, the humidity is more than 95%, the amount of fog reduction is 1~2mL/ (h·cm2), and the nozzle pressure is 78.5~137.3kPa (0.8~1.4kgf/cm2).
Acetate Salt Spray Test (ASS)
Applicable scope: copper-nickel-chromium or copper-chromium decorative coating and anodic oxide film of aluminum
Acetate Salt Spray Test is developed on the basis of Neutral Salt Spray Test. It is to add some glacial acetic acid to the 5% NaCl solution, so that the pH value of the solution is reduced to about 3, the solution becomes acidic, and the final salt spray is changed from neutral salt spray to acidic. Its corrosion rate is approximately 3 times that of the NSS test.
Copper Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test (CASS)
Applicable scope: copper-nickel-chromium or nickel-chromium decorative coating and anodic oxide film of aluminum
Copper Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test is an accelerated test method specially designed to evaluate copper-nickel-chromium or multilayer nickel-chromium. Based on the Acetate Salt Spray Test, CuCl2 (0.26±0.02) g/L is added to the spray liquid, so that the effect of copper ions is used to accelerate the corrosion of the battery, thereby simulating more severe working environment. Its corrosion rate is approximately 8 times that of the NSS test.
Alternating Salt Spray Test
Applicable scope: metal coating anodizing film, organic coating on metal substrate
Alternating Salt Spray Test is a comprehensive salt spray test, which is actually a neutral salt spray test plus a constant damp-heat test. It is mainly used for cavity-type machine products, through the penetration of the tidal environment, salt spray corrosion occurs not only on the surface of the product, but also in the interior of the product. It converts the products alternately under the conditions of salt fog and hot and humid environment, and finally examines whether the electrical and mechanical properties of the whole machine have changed or not.
